In Elementary Music Classes Students Will:
Learn the fundamentals of singing.
Students will learn how to illustrate proper vocal technique and pitch accuracy when singing. Concepts to be emphasized will include: posture, pitch accuracy, lyrics, rehearsal, performance,breathing technique, phrasing, solfege, dynamics, and diction.
Steady beat and rhythm will play a comprehensive role in each lesson. Students will apply their understanding of steady beat and rhythm through performance, movement, choreography, instruments and conducting. By the end of the year, all students will have learned note values in 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 meters. Students in 4th grade will be proficient in 6/8 meter as well.
While reading music students will learn where written notes fall on a treble clef staff. Students will learn to play simple and complex melodies on percussion, string, and wind instruments (Claves, Orff instruments, Soprano Recorder, Boomwhackers, Ukulele, etc).
Students will be exploring various cultures and customs from around the world.
Through composition and improvisation Students will analyze chord structures and apply their knowledge of music theory and notation to express themselves creatively through writing music, movement, vocal and instrumental performances. We will be studying the history of composers in western and world music. Students will have access to technology resources, such as Garage Band , Noteflight, Audacity, and iPad Applications for composition/arranging projects.
Students will be scored using specific rubrics for vocal proficiency, music theory, and recorder performance.
